Surviving and Thriving
A Canadian Perspective on Women in Trades and Technology and Employment Equity

Copies are still available of this book of presentations and workshops of the first major Canadian conference on women in trades and technology and employment equity, which took place in October, 1988. The ideas and practical applications describes still document leading edge activities for these current issues.

Providing information, insights and perspectives not available elsewhere, this book would be a useful text for pre-trades and technology courses for women, essential background knowledge for instructors; and practical approached for employers, employment equity practitioners and others concerned with these issues.

Especially for those WITT-women, and others who could not attend the weekend sessions of tradeswomen and technologist, the workshops on "What Happened Once We Got Our Tickets," "Overcoming Isolation," Sharing Our Union Experience," "Language Styles, Stress and Macho," Gender Talk" provide significant and fascinating insights into the experiences of women working in these fields today. This material can also be used effectively in program development for implementing Employment Equity initiatives.

The most useful and practical workshops from the second two days of the conference were also edited for the book. Employers, educators, consultants, government and union representatives, and women workers in the field participated in the included sessions: From Task Force to Implementation - Ontario Hydro's approach to integrating their Trades, Technical and Operators (TTO) workforce Seniority and Employment Equity and EE: Consultative Process Models in a Unionized Environment - thoughtful explorations of those most difficult topics Bridging Programs for Industry - Toronto's Bridges program for clerical worker's entry into trades and technology Court Orders: What Then? - a dynamic description and lively discussion with CN Rail and the new York Sheetmetal Workers Union
